Farmer’s Puzzle

© 2012 by Heike Scharmann

I read about this pattern being too much related to World War II. I certainly see what is meant but I cannot agree. There are not only many bird related but also many puzzle related block patterns. There is Grandmother’s Puzzle, Fool’s Puzzle, Washington’s Puzzle, Old Maid’s Puzzle, (Old) Bachelor’s Puzzle, School Girl’s Puzzle, Devil’s Puzzle, Irish Puzzle, Boston Puzzle, Pullman Puzzle, and World’s Fair Puzzle. And they all have one thing in common: they puzzle you when you look at them.

They use a certain combination or arrangement of geometric forms that is out of the common way. That gives you the impression of something strange or something that’s not actually there. And their simple aim is to fool the eye.

Did you see the second design: four flying geese (white), flying in four different directions?
